Islamic Collection: Calligraphy Rings and Necklaces

These pieces carry Arabic script in 925 sterling silver. The shahada, la ilaha illallah, appears on both a ring and a necklace; Ayatul Kursi, the Verse of the Throne, is given the room of a pendant because the line is long; and shorter phrases such as la tahzan, innallaha ma'ana suit the flat face of a signet.

Others are quieter in tone. Ya Wadood names one of the divine attributes, the Loving, and the Alif design works from the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, reduced to a single upright stroke. Silver takes engraving cleanly, which is why both raised and recessed calligraphy read well at this scale.

Keeping engraved script legible

Letterforms lose definition when polish builds up in the recesses and lightens them. Clean engraved silver with warm water, a drop of soap and a soft brush, then dry it completely. Avoid dipping solutions, which strip the darkened background that makes the script stand away from the surface.
