Choosing a men's chain comes down to three decisions: the link style, the width and the length. This guide explains the main types of chains, what each one is good for, and a men's chain length chart so the chain sits exactly where you want it.

Types of chains for men

Box, rope, Cuban link, Franco and King chains compared side by side

Box chain

Square or rounded links joined into a smooth, continuous line. A round box chain is flexible, rarely kinks and has a quiet shine, which makes it the most practical chain for a pendant and for everyday wear. Our Italian round box chains come in widths from 2 to 5 mm, in sterling silver and gold-plated finishes.

Rope chain

Small links twisted together so the chain looks like a rope. The spiral catches light from every angle, so a rope chain reads as more decorative than a box chain of the same width. It looks best at 3 mm and above, worn alone or with a simple pendant.

Cuban link (curb) chain

Interlocking oval links, twisted so they lie flat against the chest. Cuban chains are heavy, confident and usually worn on their own at 6 mm or wider. They are the chain most people picture when they think of a bold men's necklace.

Franco chain

V-shaped links packed tightly into a chain with a square profile. It looks similar to a slim Cuban chain but is especially strong and resists kinking, so it is a good choice if you want a chain that you never take off.

King chain

A dense, woven chain with a square profile and a lot of texture for its width. Even at 2 to 3 mm it has real presence, which makes it a middle ground between a fine box chain and a heavy Cuban.

Other common chains

You will also see cable chains (simple round links), Figaro chains (a pattern of short and long links), wheat chains (braided, textured) and mariner or anchor chains (oval links with a bar across each one). They follow the same rules on width and length below.

Chain width guide

  • 2 to 3 mm: fine and subtle. The right width for a pendant, and easy to wear under a shirt.
  • 4 to 5 mm: noticeable on its own and still comfortable every day. The sweet spot for a chain without a pendant.
  • 6 mm and wider: a statement. Best for Cuban and rope chains worn alone, and better suited to a broader neck and chest.

As a rule, match the chain to the pendant: a heavy pendant on a very fine chain looks unbalanced, and a small pendant disappears on a thick chain.

Men's chain length chart

Lengths are measured end to end, clasp included. Where a chain sits depends on your neck and build, so treat this as a guide and go one size longer if you have a larger neck.

LengthcmWhere it sits on most menBest for
20 in51 cmAt the base of the neck, around the collarboneA chain worn on its own, open collars
22 in56 cmJust below the collarboneThe most versatile men's length; small pendants
24 in61 cmUpper chest, below an open shirt collarPendants worn over or under a shirt
26 in66 cmMid-chestLarger pendants, layering, broader builds
28 in71 cmLower chestLong pendants, bold layered looks

Our chains come in lengths from 20 to 26 inches, and many pendants are offered with a chain up to 28 inches or without a chain at all.

How to find your chain length

  1. Wrap a soft tape measure or a piece of string around your neck where you want the chain to sit.
  2. Add about 2 inches (5 cm) so the chain hangs naturally rather than tight against the skin.
  3. Round up to the nearest standard length in the chart.

If you are layering, keep about 2 inches between each chain, for example 20 and 22 inches, or 22 and 24 inches with a pendant on the longer one.

Looking after your chain

Take your chain off before swimming, the gym and sleep, and store it flat or hung up so it does not tangle. Sterling silver chains can be brightened with a silver cloth; for why silver darkens and how to prevent it, read Is sterling silver real silver?

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular chain length for men?

22 inches is the most versatile length for men; 24 inches is the usual choice for a pendant worn over a shirt.

What is the strongest type of chain?

Franco and Cuban chains are among the strongest because their links are tightly interlocked. Box chains are also robust for their width.

What width chain should a man wear?

3 mm is a safe everyday width with or without a pendant; 5 mm reads as a chain in its own right, and 6 mm and up is bold.

Can I wear a pendant on any chain?

Yes, as long as the chain fits through the pendant's bail and suits its weight. Box and rope chains are the most common pendant chains.
