A man's necklace does one of two jobs: a chain worn on its own, or a chain that carries a pendant. Everything here is 925 sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5 per cent silver hardened with copper so that links and bails keep their shape through daily wear. Some pieces add gold plating or a darker rhodium finish.
Men's silver chains range from hand-engraved links, where each link is cut by hand before assembly, to rope and Cuban styles. The Italian round box chain is the everyday option: smooth, flexible and made in several widths, with gold-plated versions for a warmer tone.
Pendant necklaces put the design at the centre, from natural stones such as tiger eye, onyx, agate and turquoise to symbols such as the lion, the sword and the Viking vegvisir. The compass necklaces are built around a north star set with black, white or red zircon, and the zodiac necklaces give each of the twelve signs its own silver disc. Many pendants can be ordered on their own or with a chain.
Chains come in lengths from 20 to 26 inches, and pendant chains run up to 28 inches. On most men a 20-inch (51 cm) chain sits around the collarbone, 22 inches (56 cm) falls just below it, and 24 inches (61 cm) or longer drops to the upper chest, which suits a pendant worn over a shirt. With a broader neck, go one size up.
Take a necklace off before swimming or training, since chlorine and sweat speed up tarnish, and store it flat in a pouch so the chain does not kink. A silver cloth brings back the shine; on engraved or oxidised pieces avoid silver dip, which strips the dark finish that makes the engraving stand out.
