Black onyx is the stone most men reach for when they want a ring that is bold but never loud. It is deep, even and glossy, it goes with a suit as easily as with a T-shirt, and it has carried meaning for thousands of years. This guide covers what onyx is, what it symbolises, how it compares with obsidian and black agate, how to tell if it is real, and how to wear and care for it.
What is onyx?
Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz. Classic onyx is banded, with straight parallel layers of black and white, which is why it has been used for cameos and carved seals for centuries. The solid black stone sold as black onyx today is almost always chalcedony that has been colour-enhanced to an even, deep black. The treatment has been used since Roman times; it is stable and permanent and does not wear off.
The name comes from the Greek onyx, meaning fingernail or claw, a reference to the pale, translucent bands in some stones. Onyx is hard, around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it stands up well to everyday wear.
Black onyx meaning
Onyx has a long history as a stone of strength and dignity. Roman soldiers and officials carried onyx seals and intaglio rings, Victorian jewellers set black onyx in mourning jewellery, and it has been a favourite for men's signet rings for generations. Today it is most often associated with:
- Strength and resilience: staying steady under pressure.
- Self-control and focus: a calm, disciplined state of mind.
- Protection: traditionally worn to guard against negative influences.
- Grounding: its deep black is linked with stability and composure.
These meanings come from history and tradition rather than scientific evidence. Many men choose onyx simply because it looks sharp and goes with everything.
Why onyx is so popular in men's rings
In our own shop, roughly one in five rings sold over the past year was set with black onyx, and two of our three best-selling men's rings are onyx designs. The reasons are practical as much as symbolic: black works with every metal and every colour of clothing, it hides everyday wear better than lighter stones, and it gives a clean, graphic contrast against polished or engraved silver. Onyx vs obsidian vs black agate
- Onyx is chalcedony: opaque, with a soft, waxy-to-glassy polish. Hard and durable.
- Obsidian is natural volcanic glass: very glossy, often slightly translucent at thin edges, and softer, so it scratches and chips more easily.
- Black agate is also chalcedony, and in the trade the names often overlap. Agate usually shows curved bands where onyx has straight ones.
How to tell if black onyx is real
- Temperature: real stone feels cool when you first touch it; plastic and resin feel warm.
- Weight: onyx is noticeably heavier than plastic or acrylic of the same size.
- Surface: polished onyx has a smooth, even shine. Tiny bubbles or mould lines suggest glass or plastic.
- Colour: an even black is normal for black onyx because of the colour enhancement, so uniform colour alone is not a sign of a fake.
- Buy from a seller who names the stone and describes the metal it is set in.
How to wear black onyx
- With silver: the classic combination. A square onyx signet in polished silver is one of the most versatile rings a man can own.
- With gold: black and gold look rich and formal; ideal for evening wear.
- On the wrist: an onyx bead bracelet is an easy everyday piece and stacks well with tiger eye or lava stone; see what each bead stone means in our beaded bracelet guide.
- On the little finger: a slim onyx signet is the classic pinky ring.
- For occasions: black onyx is a popular choice for groomsmen and for men who want a ring that suits a dark suit.
Caring for onyx
Onyx is durable, but it can still be scratched by harder stones and damaged by harsh chemicals. Clean it with lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, dry it well, and keep it away from bleach, acids and ultrasonic cleaners. Store it separately from diamonds and other hard stones. For the silver around the stone, follow our guide to cleaning sterling silver, and never soak an onyx ring in a baking soda bath.
