14K Solid Gold Rings with Natural Stones

Solid gold behaves differently from a plated or vermeil piece, because the metal is the same all the way through: nothing can wear off the surface, and the colour stays constant for as long as the ring exists. 14K is 58.5 per cent pure gold, alloyed for the hardness a daily ring needs.

The shapes stay deliberately plain, running through basic, minimal, square and classic bands, since the stone is what changes. Black onyx, tiger eye and red agate sit low in simple settings, while blue and red zircon, star stone and mother of pearl lighten the same forms considerably.

Why 14K rather than a higher karat

Pure gold is soft enough to mark with a fingernail, so rings are always alloyed. At 14K the metal resists scratching and bezel edges hold their shape under knocks, which matters on something worn every day. Higher karat gold looks richer but dents and thins faster, especially on a narrow band.
