Vermeil means gold over sterling silver: a 925 silver base with a heavy layer of 18K gold on top, which is what separates it from ordinary plating on a cheap base metal. The result wears warm and yellow while keeping the weight and the hallmark of a silver piece.
The rings follow two or three simple templates, a basic band, a minimal version of it and a squarer profile, and vary the stone instead. Black onyx and tiger eye give the most graphic look, red agate and mother of pearl are softer, and blue, green, red, black and amethyst zircon cover the bright end.
Keeping the gold layer intact
A vermeil surface is thick but not infinite, and it wears where it rubs: the underside of a ring, the edge of a bezel. Take these pieces off before swimming, cleaning or the gym, keep them away from polishing cloths meant for bare silver, and clean with warm water and a soft cloth.
