A stone is what gives a man's ring its character. Some men choose by colour, some by what the stone has meant for centuries, and some because a father or grandfather wore the same one. This guide brings together the stones we set most often, what each is traditionally said to mean, how well it wears, and where to read more. It is the starting point for all our stone guides.
Ring stones at a glance
| Stone | Traditional meaning | Hardness (Mohs) |
|---|---|---|
| Black onyx | Strength, self-control, protection | 6.5 to 7 |
| Turquoise | Protection, travel, good fortune | 5 to 6 |
| Tiger eye | Confidence, focus, courage | 7 |
| Mother of pearl | Calm, purity, protection | 3.5 |
| Agate and aqeeq | Protection, stability, faith | 6.5 to 7 |
| Lapis lazuli | Wisdom, truth, royalty | 5 to 5.5 |
| Malachite | Transformation, protection, balance | 3.5 to 4 |
| Amethyst | Calm, clarity, sobriety | 7 |
| Labradorite | Intuition, protection | 6 to 6.5 |
| Ruby, sapphire and emerald | Passion, wisdom and renewal | 9, 9 and 7.5 to 8 |

| Amber | Warmth, energy, healing | 2 to 2.5 |
| Cubic zirconia | Sparkle (no traditional meaning) | 8 to 8.5 |
The Mohs scale runs from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). Everyday knocks come mostly from quartz dust, which is 7, so stones around 7 and above keep their polish longest. Softer stones are still perfectly wearable; they simply need a little more care.

Caring for stone rings
- Hard stones (7 and above): warm soapy water and a soft brush are all they need.
- Medium stones (5 to 6.5), such as turquoise and lapis: wipe clean, avoid chemicals and long soaks.
- Soft stones (below 5), such as mother of pearl, malachite and amber: damp cloth only, no perfume, no ultrasonic cleaners.
For the silver itself, see our guide to cleaning sterling silver, and check your size with the men's ring size chart before you order.
